The Kitchen, Inc.'s Emergency Shelter provides temporary shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The 13 apartment-style units are critical in getting people off the streets and on a path to permanent housing. Each shelter unit includes a kitchen, bathroom, and separate bedroom for children. Resources onsite include a laundry room, computer lab, playground, and case management. In shelter, individuals and families have the safety and support to start addressing their barriers to stable housing. Case managers work with each individual to assess their needs and barriers with the goal of moving into permanent, affordable housing in the community within 90 days. Barriers can range from mental and physical health, employment, education, and legal issues. Case managers evaluate the condition, experiences, and skills of residents to help them form goals and design a plan which uses these experiences, interests, and skills to move each person out of homelessness and toward independence and self-sufficiency. The Emergency Shelter accepts referrals from One Door when beds become available.
